The Agricultural Revolution

And when the land blew spring again, she returned home with her ox. And she began to cultivate the rice fields, the paddy fields, ploughing narrow strips. And she bent over, and planted it, with all sorts of green things. The cereal grasses. Emmer. Einkorn. Barley. They looked like leeks, the way they shot up through the yellow grass. Flax, oats, peas. Maize. Bananas. Millet. Taro. Yam. Sugarcane. She threw her hands up and celebrated the richness of the field. Her friends came running. She spread the seeds to everyone who could put their hands out quickly enough. And they spread their seeds all across the country. And as they were spreading, it came to their attention that there was another country. And she started writing. It took up most of her days. What if there was a place, she thought, where there was no place for work, only laughter and play. Her friends told her to go take a hike. So she did. She started running. She leapt across the river, and crossed into the great city of Thebes.
